It looks like I’m on some kind of Team Fortress 2 kick lately – probably because Valve is on a roll over there. In case you haven’t heard, they’re rolling out a new co-op mode in an event they’re calling “Mann vs. Machine.” Read up on it here. I’ve wanted some kind of campaign or co-op mode in TF2 for a while now, and while this isn’t exactly what I had imagined, I’m still rather excited. Enthused. Fun word, that. Anyway, check out the promo video below:
What are your thoughts on the video and the new game mode? Let us know in the comments!
There’s a lot of great work out there since the Source Filmmaker tool has become freely available, after a limited availability beta period. Here’s another one with especially high production value:
Remember those documentaries from Valve Software that say that the Team Fortress 2 art style was inspired by popular Hollywood animated movies? And remember how there was a clear resemblance between that art style and The Incredibles? Well, it looks like things have come full circle now that Valve’s Source Filmmaker beta is out in the wild. I found this little gem when browsing around YouTube the other day:
Over on the Team Fortress 2 website, something called “Pyromania” is in full swing. They’ve got some new items, a new level, and so on. But what we really wanted to see was the new Meet the Pyro video, am I right? After years of waiting, we are finally given the last of the 9 character intro videos from Valve Software, the introduction and back story for the most mysterious of the Team Fortress characters, and it’s… it’s…
I’ll wait for you to go watch it, just in case you haven’t yet.
Done? Good. As I was saying, and as you probably just found out, it’s kind of a letdown. Yes, it has the excellent production quality that we’ve come to expect from the videos of the Meet the Team series, but beyond the initial funny twist, I thought there wasn’t much to it. Speaking of production quality, though, that’s just what the community will be jam packing their very own videos with now that Valve has introduced Source Filmmaker (beta). It’s the tool they use to create their own cinematic videos, like Meet the Pyro. I’m looking forward to seeing what kinds of great videos show up on the web in the near future…
What did you think of Meet the Pyro and the rest of Pyromania? Got some great ideas for your own films with Source Filmmaker? Leave a comment!
Woah, woah, hold everything.
The team behind Valve’s online shooter Team Fortress 2 has posted a most interesting update on the TF2 blog, including some fascinating details about their plans for 2012. This includes a secret TF2 project, the new Steam Workshop Blog, and the Second Annual Saxxy Awards. Those are all well and good, but I think we’re most interested in the final “Meet the Team” short, the ever-forthcoming video documenting the Pyro’s (maybe?) dark and (probably) storied past. All the speculating fans will finally find answers to some of the questions surrounding the flame-throwing maniac. Is it a woman in the suit? Is she secretly the announcer? Was his or her flamethrower handed down by his or her ancestor GLaDOS from another universe through a inter-dimensional portal opened by none other than Gordon Freeman’s great uncle? But then, will Valve even reveal any of these details? We’ll have to wait for the video to find out.
On second thought, with Valve time in the mix, who knows when we’ll see any of this stuff. Oh, well. If you’ve got predictions about the Pyro or the secret project, or anything else about this post, leave a comment.
As part of The Über Update, Team Fortress 2 is now free to play. Yep, those who have never played before can now jump in and enjoy the cartoony shooter free of charge on Steam. Not just for a weekend or some silliness like that – forever. Those who spend any money on the game by way of having purchased it or purchasing something in the Mann Co. Store will be entitled to a Premium account, as opposed to the Free account. Premium users receive a few extra perks, like a larger backpack and more crafting and trading privileges, but everything else is just as it was. Tell your friends, push some carts, and capture some intel!
It’s almost worth another news item to mention that, also part of the latest update, the long awaited “Meet the Medic” video is now available, showing off the Medic’s invaluable contributions to the team. To see the video and to check out the latest and greatest additions to the game, check out the update! For your convenience, I have also embedded the video after the jump. Enjoy!
