Wishes for E3 2012
E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, when the gaming world holds its breath to learn the latest big announcements from game companies the world over, is almost upon us once again. Every year, people wait to see what kind of hidden treasures are coming from the likes of Activision, Microsoft, Naughty Dog, Sony, and Nintendo. And every year, everyone has their own dream announcements they hope to see – admit it, you have some too. Here are mine:
- A new Descent or Freespace game: Oh man, those could be sweet. No guarantees, since I wasn’t all that impressed with Descent 3, but I would love to see someone stick to the best parts of those games and make something fresh.
- Mirror’s Edge 2: The original Mirror’s Edge was different, innovative, and despite a few flaws, fun. Running at high speeds across roof tops, jumping, rolling, and climbing was pretty sweet, right up until some bug got me killed. I’m sure that, with the experience gained from the reception of the first game, DICE could make something great!
- Half-Life 3: Yeah, it’s probably not going to happen this year, given their previous comments, but a guy can dream. By the way, if they do announce Half-Life 3 (or Episode 3, or however they number it), it had better come with some pretty major innovations. A gravity gun and see-saw puzzles just ain’t gonna cut it anymore (I’m not sure they did in the first place). That’s not to say that they shouldn’t stay true to the source material, but I think some additions are in order.
- Real Innovation: As much as I like the Modern Warfare trilogy, I think the last one was about as far as they could go without making some pretty major changes. While I’m not a big fan of Treyarch, it’s good to see Black Ops II taking some risks with things like branching storylines. But I want big, game-changing innovation like Mirror’s Edge’s parkour mechanic, or something else we haven’t seen before. And I’m not just talking about Call of Duty. Warning, though: don’t make it a gimmick!
That’s just my two cents. In just a few days, we’ll find out if any of these will become reality. Got any E3 wishes of your own? Leave a comment!
