Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a first-person shooter for PC, XBox360, and PS3 by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games that continues the globe-trotting, high-intensity, world war action, beginning immediately after the events of its predecessor, Modern Warfare 2. It is also the subject of a continuous stream of biased reviews and comments all over the Internet. Because I am a fan of the Call of Duty series, I feel I should preface this post with the following notice: before you lump me in with those that blindly defend the series without justification, let me say that my statements below about the game are backed up with experiences and analysis. With that said, my experience with Modern Warfare 3 thus far has been very positive.

Let’s start with the single-player campaign. As I progressed through the game, I noticed that it is even more varied than its predecessors in story, locations, and missions. Modern Warfare 3 has come a long way from the original in the series which focused strictly on military missions and the consequences thereof. This immediate continuation from the second game puts the protagonists in a more vulnerable, self-directing position, allowing their personalities and vendettas to shine through more than when military discipline alone determined their actions. In fact, the story in general had a more personal feeling to it, with more emotional moments and actions. The campaign was a little shorter than those of the previous two titles, but fun nonetheless. I was a little disappointed with the lack of meaningful plot twists and with the ending, but the throwbacks and references to the first Modern Warfare were nice to see, and the campaign comes together nicely overall.
The Special Ops portion of the game includes two subsections: Missions and Survival. The Special Ops missions are an assortment of individual missions that can be completed by oneself or cooperatively (except where two people are required), much like those appearing in Modern Warfare 2. These are great for a quick play session, or when you want to try something different. Survival mode is probably familiar to those who played Zombies in Black Ops and World at War by Treyarch. The Modern Warfare 3 interpretation takes that idea, expands it, and improves on it heavily. Rather than fighting hordes of mindless zombies, players must face wave after wave of armed militants of increasing difficulty, including everything from militia and attack dogs to helicopters and heavily armored juggernauts. The items for purchase are also vastly expanded, now including things like sentry guns, air strikes, perks, and squads of reinforcements. This mode can be played on all 16 of the multiplayer maps, and will keep me and my buddies coming back and attempting to beat our personal records.
Finally, let’s take a look at the all-important multiplayer experience. Likely the most notable addition to the game is the strike packages, which allow players to choose how their kill streaks behave – for example, the Support strike package receives more defensive, support-oriented rewards, but their streak does not reset upon death. Nearly all of the complaints of the previous game have been fixed, with little additions everywhere that bring the game to a new level of polish. For example, streaks are based on points, rather than kills, now rewarding players that do more than just eliminate enemies. These streaks also start over after the player has unlocked the last one, so that they don’t have to die to start getting rewards again. The level design has been generally enjoyable, and the lag has been minimal so far. The core experience is largely the same as in Modern Warfare 2, but they add enough features on top of it to result in a significant improvement.
Please don’t listen to the trolls on the Internet who make baseless claims about the nature of Modern Warfare 3 for whatever reason. When you take a close and honest look at this game, you’ll learn that those are, for the most part, false. I will address one of the more common ones here: that it’s the equivalent of DLC, or “Modern Warfare 2.5”, and that it’s not worth the price of a full game. This is quite easy to refute. Most DLC includes a handful of levels and perhaps a new game mode. If someone included in a content package an entire campaign, new multiplayer game modes, all-new co-op special ops missions, 16 new multiplayer levels, and a Survival mode on those 16 maps (compared to the very limited selection in Black Ops), it would be, to my knowledge, far and away the biggest DLC pack of all time. Judging it honestly, this game is going to provide hours and hours of enjoyable play, and isn’t that what we want? Besides, people have bought games at full price and gotten much less.
In my mind, what it comes down to is this: If you’re a fan of this type of game, Modern Warfare 3 does a good job of improving and bringing new content to its already extensive and polished game experience. There are many pieces to this game, so you’ll probably find some things that appeal to you more specifically, and you’ll likely enjoy the game overall. Personally, I think the game is quite good.
